What I’m reading (1)

Believe it or not I can read.  I used to hate reading…couldn’t stand it.  I would have rather watched a movie, or something on TV.
Nowadays, I’m quite fond of reading. By no means am I a bookworm that plows through 3-4 books a week (no offense Sis), but I always have a book or two sitting next to my bed that I’m working my way through.

I try to mix things up. I like something technical/intellectual, but I also want to be entertained. Sometimes I can find that in one book, but most of the time, I have a selection that I rotate from night to night.
For example, right now I’m reading:

The “Short Guide” is a book that some of you have seen before. It is a required text for the 700 level Contemporary Art Class at SCAD. Did I read it in school? NOPE. But one day I was on this “I want to learn more about art” kick. I picked it up, and started reading from page one. To tell you the truth, It’s GREAT!
It’s written in loose conversational style, so its like listening instead of reading a set of instructions. The author doesn’t just talk about how to write a paper, she talks about how to look at art. Giving you questions to ask yourself, and others, that open your mind to something that you may have not initially been interested in. There are technical sections on how to cite sources and things like that, but this book focuses more on making you a better writer, by helping you understand the art you are writing about.
This book has definitely improved my writing skills in a very general way, but more importantly, it has helped me look at art (even my own) in different ways, helping me to understand it on different levels.
Of all the “required” texts you have never read… this is one you should consider picking up. Even if you aren’t planning on doing any writing, the insights on viewing and interpreting art or worth the price alone.

Sherlock Holmes…well, I saw the movie, having never read any of the stories, and loved it. Talking with people who had read the stories said the movie showed the “real” Holmes. The drug addict, thrill seeker, and general eccentric. I thought to myself…I need to read these stories! So I found this chubby volume at Target, $4.99. 1000 pages of tiny words. It’s a daunting book to read, because of the size of the type, and the shocking amount of pages to read. But the stories are brilliant. So many catch phrases, plots, and other themes that are found in modern entertainment are found throughout. Ever hear Stewie on Family Guy say “What the deuce!” Yep… that was Holmes.
Worth the read, particularly if you like taking your time with a book, like me. You won’t be blazing through this in a weekend, or at the beach, but it’ll give you a good month or more of enjoyment. Oh by the way… there is a Vol. 2!

Reading anything fun or interesting yourself? Tell me about it!

Social Media Marketing

So I spent yesterday on marketing…
“Social Media” marketing to be specific.

I’ve been on a couple media sites for a while, one being Model Mayhem, the other Twitter.
I can really give Model Mayhem a great deal of credit for what I have been able to do in the fashion world. It allowed me to find my first “real” models, put me into contact with stylists, MUA’s and the like, which made my work better.
Twitter… What a weird concept, but oh so fun. I’ve met TONS of people, and found many many of the photographers I admire just hanging around on this thing. Nothing as far as business has really happened on Twitter, but Its more visibility for me.

Deciding I needed to be more “visible”, I spent yesterday creating a new Twitter account (needed one that was strictly business) and started following anyone and everyone I knew (or heard of), Updated my Linkedin profile…put up my resume and asked for some references, Updated my Photocrew stuff, and in all this I have been invited to Join TessCafe! (Which is sort of an Elitist model mayhem)

All in all I felt extremely productive yesterday… I got a couple more scenes shot of my video project, and managed to do a fair bit of marketing.

If you haven’t ventured into the “Social Media” arena… I urge you to consider it. The more visible you and your brand are… the more success you “should” have… besides.. its free advertising!

here are my “SM” profiles…

Sorry guys… I’ve been a lazy piece of shit…
well not entirely… I’m working on a video project, and am really focused on it at the moment.
I’ve got sooooooooooo much to talk about particularly with video, but I didn’t want to unload a whole page of text without some video to go along with it.

So bear with me..

ps… I know… where are the dailies? <—LAZY
